Tarot Of The Day July 3, 2018 - Day 15: The Raven’s Prophecy Deck - The Hanged Man

Tarot Of The Day July 3, 2018 - Day 15: The Raven’s Prophecy Deck - The Hanged Man

I have begun the creation of an 89 day tarot course in a group I am a member of on Facebook ('A Kaleidoscope of Magical Perceptions' is the name of the group, please feel free to request membership - it is full of fun people and really great posts about all manner of topics) and I thought I would cross post the information here to this blog as well. Once the initial 89 days of the course have passed, it will start over using a different tarot deck. The text of the fifteenth session follows.

The Rider-Waite deck shows The Hanged Man as a man, typically understood to be The Fool, hanging by his right foot that has been tied to a tree that is in the shape of a T. His left leg is crossed behind the right, and his arms are behind his back. His face is sedate, calm, and a halo is glowing about his head. Some say that his leg crossed behind him represents the number 4, or the alchemical symbol for Jupiter and the metal Tin. His calm seems to indicate that he is not dead, as the name of the card might insinuate, but merely accepting of his lot. Perhaps this is a choice, and just yet another step upon the path to enlightenment.

The Rider-Waite booklet lists the following keywords for The Hanged Man: wisdom, trials, circumspection, discernment, sacrifice, intuition, divination, prophecy (upright,) selfishness, the crowd, body politic (reversed.)

In Maggie Stiefvater’s Raven’s Prophecy deck, The Hanged Man is a crow, wings spread as if to push off the ground, but upside down, his talons on a branch of a tree. He certainly does not look resigned to his fate, or comfortable! Maggie writes: “ I was taught that The Hanged Man of this card referred to Odin, who chose to hang himself upside down on the World Tree for nine days in order to receive wisdom. That potent image perfectly encapsulates the nuance of this card. The Hanged Man is all about sacrifice - not a martyr’s sacrifice, but a scholar’s sacrifice. He goes not only willingly, but pleasantly toward his hanging, certain that the time spent in agony will be worth it.”

Maggie’s keywords for The Hanged Man are sacrifice, wisdom, and self-awareness.

Tomorrow - Death

***TOTD will cover the entire 78 card Raven’s Prophecy Deck alongside the Rider-Waite deck for comparison. In order to not completely burn out, this course of lessons will be 89 days long, so that every Saturday I can break the lessons up by doing a practicum lesson. Practicum lessons will take the form of a layout or spread that I will walk you through the steps of interpretation for. After the first 89 day session ends, we will start over with a one day break for a poll to be done to see what deck everyone wants to see next round. ***
